Is Hiring a Business Coach Worth It? I Have Three!

Ok, I know you are probably thinking I am crazy for having three coaches…but let me explain what I mean.

A business coach can be a live person, a course, a community of entrepreneurs, a formal education (degree), and real-life on-the-job experience.

Does that make more sense?

I have had all of these different types of coaches in my life at some point, but currently I use 3 different avenues to glean information and learn and build my business.

Why Do I Need 3 Business Coaches?

I like to think of myself as a self-starter. I am a fast learner, love to learn new things, and absolutely love to read.

My idea of a relaxing afternoon, is reading and learning a new skill. Or even planning my to-do list.

I know that sounds really boring, but I love to organize things including my activities.

BUT, the problem I have is application. I can read all day long and learn new techniques and methods, but if I never actually DO them…..I have wasted my precious time!

Alas, that is why I need 3 business coaches to keep me on track.

As you probably know, my education is in business management and finance. I have a CPA license and have run accounting departments in past jobs.

I have spent the last several years homeschooling and having babies (4 girls to date) so I have worked from home part-time helping small businesses with their accounting and business needs.

I love to write as well, and my interest was piqued when I ran across Wealthy Affiliate University a year ago so I joined. My first website I created about one of my passions was this one.

Since then, I have created 3 more websites. It’s an addiction I’m afraid!

Then my husband was laid off of work, and the online business needed to become more than a hobby, but a help to provide income for us.

He wasn’t much into blogging, so a friend introduced us to selling on Amazon and the rest is history.

Now we have 2 separate businesses we are trying to run and with 4 children under our feet here at home 24/7.

Working at home definitely has its ups and downs, but it is an adventure.

So in a nutshell, that is where we are right now and why I have the following 3 business coaches that I rely heavily on for my family’s income (and sanity):

Wealthy Affiliate

Wealthy Affiliate University is where I learned the bulk of what I know about building a website about a topic I am passionate about, how to write blog posts, create images and graphics, and how to make money from my website.  pick a passion build a business

They also taught me how to increase the amount of visitors that come to my website and how to help others learn the same. They offer a great community of help and advice and the other members give suggestions and tips to you after reviewing your posts. It is all done in a very professional manner as well.

I consider this community a business coach because this is where I go to ask questions if I need help with my websites and for advice on what might need to be changed to be more successful.

Proven Amazon CoursePAC-affiliate-graphics-125x125

Once we started selling on Amazon, we realized how stringent the rules were and that if you don’t play by Amazon’s rules, they will suspend your account in a heartbeat with no explanation and then you are out of business for good. We wanted to do things the right way from the beginning so we thought it would be wise to invest a few dollars in a course and community that could teach us the correct ways of running a business on Amazon.

The PAC (Proven Amazon Course) has taught us everything we need to know from how to setup a seller account with Amazon to all the different ways of how to make money with Amazon and other streams of online income.

The title of the course is actually misleading, because once you purchase the PAC course, you are automatically a member of “My Silent Team” which is another membership site that teaches other forms of businesses you can run online that has nothing to do with Amazon. You really get a wealth of information…in fact too much.

Which leads me to why we needed a 3rd coach…..

Jim Cockrum Coaching (A Real Live Person)

The first 2 coaches (courses) I mentioned above gave us all the information that we would ever need to be self-employed for a lifetime with multiple streams of income. No longer will we rely on one employer for our total provision.

The problem with the courses above is that you suffer from information overload.  And for me, that meant disaster. I kept reading, and reading, and reading and getting all excited about these new business ventures we could do, but how in the world could we find the time to do it all?

We can’t. And shouldn’t try.

Our real live business coach (which lives in the UK) helps us determine what our strengths are and helps us decide which business model would fit us best.

He helps us stay focused and provides accountability on the tasks he sets out for us to do.

He is also our lifeline to call when we don’t know what to do next and feel like we are drowning in this ship we are trying to maneuver.

Our business coach helps us cut through all the noise and bright shiny objects we (I) read on the internet and helps us stay focused on our business plan we set out.

It’s also imperative that you hire a business coach that is experienced in the business you are in so you can learn from the mistakes they have surely made in the past and be taught how to achieve success as they have.

Business coaches are a good mixture of an accountability partner, sounding board, cheerleader and even emotional support.

If you need help identifying holes in your business plan, ways to fill the gaps, and how to create an actionable plan to push your business forward, then a business coach can definitely make a difference.

Your coach should have a proven track record of success. This is where we found our wonderful coach if you are ready for a real-live person.

How Many Coaches Do You Need?

This answer will be different for everyone depending on the stage of business you are in. But think of a business coach as not only a person who can hold your hand and be a lifeline, but also a community of like-minded people in the same business, a course that teaches a step-by-step method, or a membership site that is full of all the information you will ever need.

You just have to decide which one is best for your business in this season.

Reading your article I felt like I’m reading about myself. Application of plans and ideas is a huge problem for me not to mention driving my family crazy once in a while when I’m totally lost in books for hours! So it’s really good to know that I’m not alone 🙂 Great point with having a few different coaches but even one is a huge help. It’s really important to have someone to put you back on the right track especially when you’re runnig your own business.

So glad I am not alone in the learning only mode! I have gotten better lately. I have been unsubscribing to email newsletters like crazy to retain more focus and finish working on only one project at a time. It is definitely a work in process!

    HI Kimberly,
First of all I considered it to be very inspiring just reading the thoughts that you had to share about yourself concerning your educational background and the fact that you have 4 daughters, who obviously have been a focus in your life.

Add in the fact that you so clearly seem to know what you want to accomplish in life – you appear to be an amazing woman, Kimberly.

As to the fact that you use 3 coaches to help you continue to grow and expand your business, I find it perfectly suitable for what you want to attain financially.

I consider that I have two myself- Wealthy Affiliate and the person who I joined under the program and who has served as such an educational mentor to me personally with my business.

I also was VERY impressed with what you stated about the Amazon Proven Course. For one of my websites I advertise on Amazon. I also know that I often feel like a novice as compared to others who have reached a level financially where they are raking in 5 figures monthly, (including several prominent members of WA). I on the other hand. . .

I’m going to bookmark this article Kimberly so I can read some more, (including the link that you left regarding that Amazon). As you spoke so highly of it, and consider it to be one of your 3 coaches then I would be wise to at least look into it with much intent.

Thank you for sharing this article. It truly is one of but a handful of articles that I have reviewed participating in the Comments’ portal that I positively gained so much value out of it. And to be re-read often in the future.

    Sincerely,
    Jeff

Thank you for the kind words! The Proven Amazon Course is definitely the best course about learning the ropes to sell. We have been very successful this past year and still haven’t learned everything the course covers. It is just like Wealthy Affiliate with the great community and continuing education as things on the internet evolves. Only the Proven Amazon Course covers Amazon FBA and Ebay with the great community to go along with it. Definitely check it out too! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

    Hello Kimberly,

I found your article to be really engaging and eye-opening. I, too, am beginning to build a website and feel that this needs to become more than just a hobby so that I can transition this into a full time income. And after reading your article, a good way to make that a reality would be to hire a coach. I’ll definitely keep that in my mind as because I feel that I have plateaued in some respects.

Another helpful bit of information I found here was your description of the Proven Amazon Course. I really had no idea that Amazon was strict. I’ll definitely take a deeper look into their rules and regulations.

    I appreciate your post,
    Alex

So glad you found this post helpful Alex. Yes Amazon has strict guidelines on how to package, prep, list, and ship your items. The Proven Amazon Course also teaches where and how to find inventory to sale on Amazon which is very helpful.

Hi Kimberley, thank you so much for your article. I can relate to what you said in your post: reading all the information in books and online (information overload indeed) is one thing but doing it and implementing this gained knowledge is a different story. I would love to have a personal coach, but my spending plan has other priorities at the moment. For now, I have a weekly schedule with time slots designated to building my two websites, social media activities and time for my direct selling business. And of course, there has to be enough time to spend with my family. Working from home requires a lot of self-discipline because it is easy to get sidetracked with other things.
All the best for you and your husband’s business from Anke
